Role of reserve bank of India in rural development

E Nandini and Punna Sravanthi Kumari

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is the central bank of India, and it was established on 1 April 1935, on the recommendations of the royal commission also known as the Hilton-Young commission. The RBI act of 1934 (II of 1934) provides the statutory basis of the functioning of the bank. RBI is a key player in rural development, adopting monetary policies, financial regulations, and lending schemes to promote financial inclusion and economic stability. The preamble of RBI states that “To regulate the issues of bank notes and keeping of reserves with a view to securing monetary stability in India and generally to operate the currency and credit system of the country to its advantages”.
This paper looks at the RBI contributions to rural development, including priority sector lending the establishment of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), financial inclusion programs, and microfinance support. The report examines the influence of the RBI’s polices on agricultural growth, rural entrepreneurship, and digital financial services. It also examines the success of government sponsored programs such as Kisan Credit Cards (KCC) and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in promoting economic empowerment. The study also addresses issues such as credit access, financial literacy, and rural banking infrastructure, as well as policy recommendations. This article examines the RBIs strategic initiatives to gain a better understanding of the role of central banking in sustainable rural development.
