The Indian housing finance sector is a cornerstone for economic growth and financial inclusion. Housing finance is playing a significant role for India's economic and social development, it also serving as a critical enabler for homeownership, urbanization and inclusive growth. The patterns of housing finance sanctions, disbursements and outstanding loans provide valuable insights into the health of the housing sector and the broader economy. This analysis investigates into their performance across sanctions, disbursements, asset quality and market dynamics, contextualized against broader sectoral trends like RBI policy shifts and rising household debt. This study analyses the pattern of housing finance in India with special reference to SBI and HDFC, focusing on home loan sanctions, disbursements, outstanding portfolios and market share over the decade 2014-15 to 2023-24.
