Bridging technology and sustainability: A study on green banking practices in Mangaluru City

Iral Buena Rodrigues and Ashfaq

In the last few years, sustainability has gained much importance as a strategic priority in the global banking industry, coupled with technological innovation to inspire ecologically responsible behaviour. Green banking is all about how the financial industry can balance profitability with taking care of the environment. Titled "Bridging Technology and Sustainability: A Study on Green Banking Practices in Mangaluru City", this study aims to assess the influence of technological advancement on the implementation and acceptance of green banking initiatives among customers and banking professionals.
Primary data are sourced from direct responses from bank customers in the city of Mangaluru by means of a structured questionnaire, supplemented by secondary data sourced from academic journals, bank reports, and government publications. The key concerns of the paper are the level of awareness, perception, and adoption of green banking services like online banking, mobile applications, e-statements, use of ATMs, and paperless transactions. It also covers challenges faced by banks and customers in adopting such practices, including digital literacy gaps, security concerns, and lack of awareness.
The findings indicate that technological innovation has been instrumental in making green banking successful, reducing carbon footprints, operational costs, and paper consumption. There is increasing awareness among customers about the convenience and eco-friendliness of digital banking platforms. However, enhanced promotional strategies, awareness campaigns, and policy interventions have also been identified for further strengthening.
The study concludes that, in bridging technology and sustainability through green banking, the environment is conserved, while financial inclusiveness and institutional efficiency improve. With the facilitation of digital transformation, government support, and community participation, Mangaluru could emerge as a role model for sustainable banking practices even at the national level.
