Integrating ESG, artificial intelligence, and FinTech: A conceptual framework for sustainable financial innovation in India

Achakala Sai Koteswara Rao, Kakarla Reddy Srinivas and Dr. Kuppa Jayachandra Reddy

The convergence of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Financial Technology (Fintech) has emerged as a transformative force shaping the future of sustainable finance. In India, where digital transformation and sustainability have become parallel national priorities, the integration of these domains offers an unprecedented opportunity to redefine responsible financial innovation. This conceptual paper develops a comprehensive framework that explains how AI-enabled Fintech can operationalise ESG objectives and contribute to sustainable financial innovation in the Indian context.
Drawing from stakeholder theory, institutional theory, and the Technology, Organisation, Environment (TOE) framework, this study articulates the mechanisms through which technological, organisational, and regulatory factors interact to promote ESG integration. The framework positions AI and Fintech as strategic enablers that enhance transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness within financial systems. Specifically, AI-driven data analytics enable real-time ESG performance assessment, blockchain ensures traceable and tamper-proof sustainability reporting, and Fintech platforms democratize access to green finance. Together, these technologies facilitate a shift from profit-centric to purpose-driven financial models.
The Indian financial landscape provides an ideal setting for this convergence, given the country’s proactive regulatory reforms, the rise of digital public infrastructure, and the growing investor demand for ESG-aligned assets. However, challenges such as limited ESG data availability, inconsistent reporting standards, and digital inequality hinder large-scale adoption. By synthesising interdisciplinary literature, the paper proposes a theoretical model explaining how technological innovation can drive ESG integration, resulting in sustainable financial innovation.
The study contributes to academic scholarship by bridging the theoretical gap between digital transformation and sustainable finance. It also offers practical implications for regulators, financial institutions, and policymakers seeking to align India’s financial development with sustainability objectives. The paper concludes that the ESG, AI, and Fintech nexus has the potential to accelerate India’s transition toward an inclusive, transparent, and resilient financial ecosystem, one that not only drives economic growth but also nurtures environmental stewardship and social equity.
